...the way I recall it...
 
Music used to be one of the driving forces in my life.  This was... up until 1989 when I moved to Los Angeles to chase after a career in Film/TV.  However, once I got there my musical depression creeped in and after seeing a video for the Indigo Girls (of all things!) I decided to go out and buy an acoustic guitar.  I was never really much of a guitarist, mostly keyboards.  But the acoustic guitar was cool!  Living near the beach I could climb up onto a cliff and waste the day away playing guitar!  So, after becoming a little more proficient I started writing more and more and decided it was time to play out.  Eventually I would meet a friend thru a friend and we decided to do an acoustic duo thing.  Kind of like a male hetero version of the Indigo Girls.  We were, I'd have to say, awesome.  Two-part harmonies, acoustic, no one was doing anything like us!  Then we added a third guitarist/vocalist and eventually put a whole band together... So, to make a long story short.  We were unbelievable... however... grunge/indie rock was in full swing... and we had three egos the size of Texas!  
 
So, after a few years of performing in LA as the Chaneys things started to get sour.  Again, the egos played a heavy part.  I was writing dozens of songs but the others couldn't see how they could fit into the Chaney's repertoire.  You see... every song was three part harmony.  That way it was cool and there would never be any one lead singer!  That was their biggest fear... someone else would have the spotlight and the others would have to take the back seat.
 
One holiday I decided to fly home to Kansas City to see my family.  One of my past places of employment and frolicking was a restaurant called TGIFridays.  So as I poked my head in there I ran into an old cohort from the past, Eason Pritchard.  We chatted for a bit about our present band situations and exchanged new numbers.  I eventually made it back to LA and after a few weeks recorded some acoustic demos.  25 to be exact and sent them to Eason.  Most of the songs were songs the Chaneys didn't want to touch.   I soon received a call from Eason and after about three hours of talking about what our possibilities would be we decided to get together.  Now my memory does get a little cloudy and I'm sure the details are unnecessary but I do know it was like a new flame burning strong.  I was ready to take on the world.  Eason's and my talk was so inspirational that I could hardly wait for him to fly to LA a few months later to record some tracks/demos.
 
Meanwhile, the Chaneys were trying to put together a CD and were fighting over writing credits.  I could feel the end crashing down.  And crashing it did.  I've hardly talked to either one in five years, but that's a different story.  So, Eason makes it out, we record.. take in some Mexican food... crash a private Radiohead Cd release party... chase after luscious Hollywood women... nearly die in the hills driving my '70's VW Squareback... and basically got punch-drunk on some amazing coffee at a restaurant by my old house!  Which has long been closed down.  As most everyone knows by now, those were to become the "Say, Hey, Mr. Superstar" sessions that produced the EP of the same name.
 
Looking back...
 
After many shows in LA, chasing after that big record deal in the sky, touring the Midwest and the southeast... Eason decided I should move back to KC.  That, for some reason, would be the easiest to do!  You see, we toured mostly in the Midwest.  Forget about the fact that I was making extremely large amounts of money in LA working on films like Volcano, Blade (I), and others... and that I could have supported the two of us as well as found a plethora of musicians...  No, I had to move to KC!  Which I'm glad I did... even though I sometimes regret it.  But I knew I would be able to spend more time with my family plus the band would have more touring opportunities.
 
So, that brings me to a funny story...  When I moved back to KC, the guitarist that we just hired that I had never met was flying to LA to drive back with me in a UHaul to KC!  Mr. Danny "How 'bout a beer, babe?" Putman!  We drove from LA to KC in just two days... drinking Bloody Marys and gambling in Vegas... almost dying in the Rockies due to lack of sleep and the most amazing sky you'd ever seen... fortunately we made it to KC and a few days later jumped into two weeks of solid rehearsing... bought a van and hit the road again. 
 
Backing up a bit... Eason and I did get together and recorded two of the greatest songs we ever wrote together.  Why were they great?  Because they were the first two we ever co-wrote and that we recorded them at Redhouse in Lawrence with Ed Rose.  (Ed engineered and co-produced two Moaning Lisa records)  They were huge!  The songs were "Wish You Well" and "Anybody".  Jerry Bayton would eventually come on board as a full time member of Deege playing drums.
 
I have a lot of great memories of being in Deege.  We were just starting to roll when things started falling apart.  It ended on a bad note only because of miscommunication and frustration.  But things happen for a reason now, don't they?!  We're still the best of friends and support each other like we did when we were stuck in a van for hours on end...  Oh yeah, the van was called Valveeta!  Christened by Jerry.  She is still traveling around KC.  I think now she's being manhandled by guys in Fourth Floor View.  Be gentle guys!
